What age should my children see the Orthodontist
We like to see children for the first time at the age of 10 or 11, which is before their last baby teeth are lost and before their growth spurt.
At this age all possible treatment options are available. If we see children much older than this we might have missed the opportunity to influence jaw growth or to make more space for the teeth as they grow through the gums.
Many of the children that we see at the age of 10 or 11 do not require appliances to influence jaw growth or to make more space. If this is the case, we often delay starting treatment until all the adult teeth have erupted at the age of 12 or 13.
There are a few rare exceptions where we need to start orthodontic treatment earlier than 10 or 11 years of age. If you think that your child might require early treatment you should consult your general dentist first.
